What is Bitcoin Mining and How Does it Work? (2020 Updated)
Bitcoin - The Currency of the Internet
A community dedicated to Bitcoin, the currency of the Internet. Bitcoin is a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. You might be interested in Bitcoin if you like cryptography, distributed peer-to-peer systems, or economics. A large percentage of Bitcoin enthusiasts are libertarians, though people of all political philosophies are welcome.
(Serious) AITA for making my tenant pay for my Bitcoin mining rig?
I run a powerful Bitcoin mining rig. My tenant agreed to pay for the electricity, water and repairs and I pay for the mortgage. The rent is $400 a month (reasonable pricing) and I decided to run the Bitcoin mining program without his knowledge since 2017. He discovered the rig in the bathroom he never used 🤣. He wanted me to refund the electric bill??? So I evicted him lmao. I earned 2.0242069 bitcoins that I used to buy apple stocks. AITA?
My uncle is one of those jerks who are hoarding goods in order to sell marked up on the internet, but on this run all the stuff kept disappearing from the trolley as if some invisible person was putting them back on the shelf. Fortunately, this meant he finally agreed to help with my Bitcoin mining!

How to calculate my Bitcoin mining earnings with given values
Hi! I'm a miner and I want to find out how much cash I will earn. https://www.cryptocompare.com/mining/calculatobtn has a really nice calculator for that but I want to know the actual formula based on my hashrate, network hashrate, network difficulty, block time and block reward. Please don't short numbers just use variables in the formula. Thank you! Edit: all I have is: (my hashrate)/(network hashrate) * 1440/(block time) * (block reward) but if I use 0.2 MH/s my earnings are >2 BTC/year that can't be true.... Thanks in advance! Solution: The formula is correct... I made a mistake by assuming an API returned the network hashrate in H/s but it returned GH/s.
A client is threatening to sue my bitcoin mining hosting facility
Hello everyone, I am new here, I am totally in the dark and would like your inputs on the situation. I'll do my best to explain the situation : First of all I am running an hosting facility in Montréal (quebec-canada) where people can rent some space to put their bitcoin mining device. These device required a lot of power and generate à lot of heat. At the facility we have the setup required for these. We had about 80 of them when he first called saying he wanted to use our services for 70 of them. Which was way more than we could handle. We did the work needed to expand to 70 more as it seems worth it. We stayed in touch over the course of the weeks it tooks to install everything. As soon as everything was ready we called him and he was still interested but for 43 of them. Which was still ok to us. We then went over to his place to pick up his stuff on the friday - free of charge as a gesture of good faith - so we could install everything as fast as we could. These devices make about 10$ a day so we knew he would be happy. These device are quite big and heavy so we needed 3 full vehicles to make it in one trip (about 30minutes away) The new setup was literally just installed. Like an hour before we went to his place so we still had a lot of clean up to do and installations before being fully ready but we had the week-end so it was ok. We told him an important fan was missing so until they came to install it we would do our best to install as much as we could without generating too much heat the room couldn't handle. We worked day and night as 5 people over the friday and saturday to be ready, again without any installation fees, so we would hope he would stay with us for a few months to pay for everything this costed us. We were sending him picture of the progress everyday as asked, even though it was the weekend and he was asking at around midnight and calling us about 5 times a day. The deal was, if we can't handle as much as 43, just come and pick up the rest, but of course we wanted to have as much as we could, and so did he. On the sunday I work as a private teacher, I had classes but he kept texting me to call him and everything and that he wasn't happy because only about 10 of them were running which was only 36hours after everything and over the weekend, 10 of them without installations fees. over the weekend. I told him I was buzy that i would call him in the next 15-30minutes or so.I was very respectful everytime, as I wanted to keep him as a client. The guy went full berserk mode calling me name, and saying he wented to break the contract and leave and he was going to get his stuff in the next 2 hours. (it was about 1h00 pm) I told him nobody was going to be at the facility until 8h00 pm; and I told him at least 10 times. He was just repeating, i'll be there in 2hours, be there. at 3h00 pm he called me, I answer and told him we couldn't be there until 8h00. he then goes to my house. My house is very open and my mother is very friendly, all my friends comes and go as they pleased, she just thought he was my friend so she let him in, she then called me because he was refusing to leave. I called the cop and a friend of mine that lives by and he made them leave before the cops arrived. My mother is very nervous since my father died 2 years ago, she was fuckin shacking when I got there. I was so mad I told someone else in the company to take care of him from now because things would get ugly.at 8h00 we met to clarify everything that just happened and told him he couldn't just leave like that. we had a one month engagement and we worked hard on everything. we talked about 2 hours and went to the conclusion that we would charge him 15% more for the trouble caused because we had to unplug everything and put everything back in the boxes, so we had to install everything once again. Everyone agreed it was fair. a few days later it started getting really hot, we couldn't handle more than 20 of his devices so we told him, if you want come get the rest and place them in another facility so you don't lose any money. Which is more than fair and good faith. they came and picked up 23 of his devices and went on his way, they had another places so everyone was happy. at the end of the month (3 days ago) it was time to pay. The contract says 3$ per day per working devices up to 43 devices. we still had another 2$ a day on the side that was not written because we weren't sure on the amount at the time. But when we said 2$, everyone agreed without hesitation, all 3 of them and 5 of us. Everyone was here and agreed. When it was time to pay he kept saying his devices didn't make as much as they should of, its bitcoin mining its so volatile its part of the game. he said that if a device only made about 7$ on a day he was only going to pay us 70% of what we all agreed on and he had a full chart of every device everyday. What we have is: was it working well: yes - 5$ if no 0$. But we are professionnal and we knew that everything was working as good as it could of been and we were there everysingle day to check on everything. We have a special clause thats says if a device is down for more than 24h we would pay back 50% of the mining lost. This never ever happen since we are always there but we put this in good faith to show we are professionnal. He then pulls data saying half his device never worked and he want the 50%, but he never ever told us about a problem what so ever, even though he was calling, texting and emailing us daily.Due to the heat of may, we had a few problem and some breakers popped sometime, never for 24h ever. we estimated that he lost about 2-4% because of this, which we were happy to provide a 10% discount on everything. Which is more than fair, we just didn't want any trouble. We are asking 2300$ -10% = 2070$; he want to pay 1350$ we said come get 19 of the devices and pay the 1350$ so you can still make profit on them; I mean the guys is losing 200$ everyday because he doesn't want to pay his due. We said we'd keep the last one until he paid the full amount which we though was way more than fair. Now he wants to sue us because we were unable to provide the service he signed for. Because we only took care of 20 devices on 43, he says we threatened him to increase the price of 15% at the begininng. while it was just a friendly discussion because of everything happened. He even wanted to stay another month at the 15% increased rate and we said no. We asked him to sign a paper thats says he wouldn't make trouble because he knows where the facility is and is mad about the situation, he never wanted to sign it. His friends and partners knows that this is going way to far and it doesn't make any senses. Now he is threatening to sue us unless WE gives him 3500$. I think we were always more than fair with him, I never thought i'd go in court, I don't want to, but I'm pretty sure we can win this, we have everything on our sides, and the guy is just some rich's son asshole who think he can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. What should I do? We are ready to go halfway and ask him to pay 1700$ so he can just go away but this is out of the table now, and there is no way we are paying 3500$ for no reason. We are a small company this law suits could ruin us. (I'll edit the post in an hour to fix most of the gramatical mistake; i'm not anglophone)
Another update on my bitcoin-mining/solar farm in the desert
I am headed to one of my farms today. I will take pictures and video for everyone here. It seems like a few people are having a hard time believing me. Here is the current bet that I offered: Dan owns at least 40 acres of land in a desert region. He has purchased and had installed, a solar array and battery bank for an off grid farm that also utilizes solar and batteries exclusively for mining bitcoin. He can prove, via bank statements and verified invoices, that he financed this operation with an amount no less than USD $250,000. He will prove, via the bitcoin blockchain, that he has transferred an amount of bitcoin, in the last 12 months (from today's date), consistent with an amount that is likely required to purchase 100 Bitmain Antminer S9 devices. He will also prove that he has sold at least 60 Bitmain Antminer S9 devices using eBay in the last 12 months, from today's date. I only got a total of 120 bitcoin for this bet. I guess you could say that the betting market on Reddit is in decline. My last bet was over 1,000 btc. Maybe people are starting to wake up to me. I will make a few more posts throughout the day to detail what my intentions were regarding the posts I have recently made. I should be uploading the pics and video by this evening, San Diego time. Any other requests, before I head out there? Any questions? Just so that you are not expecting some ultra amazing and modern instalation...it is just a piece of land in the desert with a medium size solar array, some small buildings with batteries, and some shipping containers that have vertical farm equipment and lights inside. There is a shelf in each containegreenhouse where I place the miners. I place between one and four miners in each greenhouse. I mostly use S9's but I also have some R4's that I am testing. So...most of you will not be blown away by my setup. I am just trying to warn you before you start bitching that you could have done better. I won't video the entire operation because it is spread out over different pieces of land and the other farm is a couple hundred miles away and I won't be going there this week. I will take pics and video of one farm. If people are nice this time, I will make further videos. I don't expect anyone to be nice, for the record.
How do I enhance my bitcoin mining productivity to gain bigger profits?
I am using a gtx 1050 nvidia graphics card and I am only able to a speed of 12 mh/s and only able to make about 50 - 60 cents a day. is there a way I can enhance the speed and the amount of profit I can get? I have seen YouTube videos of asic antminer rigs that are between $1000 - $10,000, I was hopong there is a cheaper alternative such as using rasberry pi 3 with several components that would total less than $500.
EDIT: Everyone, I totally f'd up on GPU's that I would have by end of June. I just wrote a quick VBS script that shows I'll only have 22 (15+7) by end of June. Not too shabby, but definitely not 48. Just wanted to post an update. Feel free to use the script! So I've posted here a few times in the past. Now I'll detail what I'm doing a little further and try to help others. Right now I'm working with 5x 7950's, 3x 7850's, a 6750, and 3x GTX 580's (my gaming rig). My hash rate is about 4,500 MH/s. I started this project using the DRIP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dividend_reinvestment_plan) principles in mind. I call this MRIP (Mining Reinvestment Plan). The plan is to reinvest all bitcoins mined into more mining hardware. Today I just purchased two more 7950's that are due to arrive tomorrow. Note that these two cards were purchased with bitcoins that were mined. This should bring my hash rate up to about 5660 MH/s, which will let me purchase another card next monday. The plan is every time I have enough to buy another card, I withdraw the bitcoins and convert it into cash. At this rate I'm hoping to have about 48 additional 7950 cards by the end of June or about 33,000 MH/s (33GH/s). To those I haven't gotten back with about hardware that I'm ordering, I do apologize. I'm using ported 7950's. I STRESS ported cards (ported on top, other on bottom) because they throw the heat out of the chassis. When clustering 12 cases together (4x12=48 cards) it's not ideal to "just leave the side off and hope it's cool it enough". These cases will be slammed up against each other. Going to back to hardware, I still haven't decided on a locked feature set - meaning I don't know what I'm going to buy (mobo, ram, cpu, psu, etc). Ideally I want to keep the core system down to about $70/PCI-e slot, but I have to factor in space (hashing density too). I say this because hardware pricing is always changing, but I want to lock the specs down eventually because it'll be easy to administer. Having 12 like systems will be easier to deploy than 12 totally different systems (all I have to do is image them). Being a net/sys admin I'll probably administer them with a PXE boot image (which I plan on making that publicly available along with the system specs). Anyways I apologize about that. I run an IT consulting company on the side and thus I have A CRAP LOAD of old machines with a working PCI-e slot (or two or three). I'll be using these up and then will start building out a system. Going back to mining, I'm not sure what ASIC's have in store for us. The difficulty could rise so much that by end of June I only have 4 more GPUs instead of 48. My hope is that the difficulty will not go up that high as ASIC's are still very hard to come by and really don't make a good investment case right now (or then). Looking at the difficulty graphs, TH/s seem to be leveling off in the near future - but only time will tell! Let me know if this helps! FYI I have put $0 into this so far, as I've been using old hand-me-down GPU's... Edit: You all are more than welcome to check out my mining stats! UltraSPARC_1 = 4x 7950's UltraSPARC_2 = 1x 7950 UltraSPARC_3 = 6750 UltraSPARC_4/5/7 = 7850 UltraSPARC_6 = 3x GTX 580 UltraSPARC_8 = 2x 7950 EDIT 2: A lot of you have mentioned why not buy an ASIC or aren't you afraid the difficulty will skyrocket?! I just don't see that happening soon, and this post makes my case quite nicely. They're even assuming that Butterfly Labs will start shipping in quantity lol Edit 3: UltraSPARC_8 is online! Two more 7950's, woohoo! I'll post some pictures soon. Pictures! YAY! For reference please see HERE
